Some Christians have interpreted the third and fourth chapter of Hebrews to mean that the Sabbath has been done away. The truth is that no such teaching can be found in these chapters, and in fact Hebrews 4:9 confirms the Sabbath.
“For we which have believed do enter into rest {G2663 – “katapausis”}, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. … There remaineth therefore a rest {G4520 – “sabbatismos”} to the people of God.” (Heb 4:3, 4, 9)
Thayers Lexicon tells us that “sabbatismos” means “a keeping sabbath.” It is a derivative of the word “sabbaton” (G4521) which is the Greek word for the Seventh-day Sabbath (for example, see Luke 24:56). “Sabbaton” originates from the Hebrew word “Shabbath” (H7676) which is the word for the Seventh-day Sabbath used in the fourth commandment, as well as throughout the rest of the Old Testament.
So Hebrews 4:9 should really be translated, “There remaineth therefore a keeping of the Sabbath to the people of God.” (Heb 4:3, 4, 9)
